Sam Harris
Where is the Self, if every sign of it is appearing in consciousness?
Today's meditation contains a statement / question that also drove the meditation of 20. December 2022.
This is an abstract question. It generalises the many examples, through which Sam Harris points out that everything appears in consciousness. This includes all feelings that one is somehow a Self.
Whatever appears in consciousness cannot be the Self.
For example, he points out that subtle feelings of dissatisfaction with how the meditation is going cannot be the Self.
Why not: any feeling of satisfaction, dissatisfaction, striving, effort, or thought about the meditation (residual thoughts) are just appearances in consciousness too.
They are movements within the space of consciousness like everything else. Like a sound, or pain in the knee.
